NURSING CARE FOR PATIENTS WITH SPINAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY (SMA): AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

Introduction: Spinal Muscular Atrophy, known by the acronym AME, is a genetic changr that causes the weakening or loss of muscle function. The most apparent signs that indicate the supposed pathology of a given individual are hypotonia, weakness and muscle shortage. The diagnostic of SMA is made through evidence of muscle denervation, found on electromyography and muscle biopsy, performed on patients suspected of having the disease. Recognition and immediate referral in the early stages of the diseasewill ensure that the patient receivs adequate care. Objective: Describe the importance of nursing care for patients with spinal muscular atrophy, based on scientific literature. Methodological aspects: This is na integrative review of the literaturethat was carried out in electronic databases. Research published in the last ten Years that answered the guiding question was included in the study: Wha tis the nursing care for patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy? Results: Understand the role played by nursing in supporting patients with SMA and thus contribute to improving care practices provided to these patients, promoting adequate and humanized treatment. Conclusion: The study highlights a lack of publications in the literature related to nursing care for patients with SMA.
