Abstract

Neonatal hydronephrosis is a urinary complication that results from the accumulation of urine in the upper urinary tract, leading to dilation of the renal pelvis, and can be caused by stenosis, tumors or congenital malformations. Its early detection is crucial to prevent permanent kidney complications and promote appropriate interventions. This study performed a literature review on the importance of ultrasound and other imaging tests in identifying neonatal hydronephrosis. The research was carried out between September 2nd and 3rd, 2024, using databases such as VHL, PubMed and Google Scholar. Strict inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to ensure the relevance of the articles analyzed. The selected studies revealed that imaging tests, such as MRI, can be essential in cases where ultrasound has limitations, helping to determine the severity of the condition and guiding interventions. Neonatal screening and ultrasound are essential for the early detection of hydronephrosis, allowing interventions that prevent sequelae and reduce the need for readmissions. Furthermore, emotional support and adequate information are essential for pregnant women, considering the concerns generated by diagnoses of fetal anomalies. An integrated perinatal approach is crucial for a positive prognosis.
