Abstract

The navel is a communication structure between the developing fetus and the mother, carrying maternal blood rich in nutrients and oxygen, and enabling the elimination of cellular metabolites produced by the embryo. Omphalopathies in calves are inflammatory and infectious diseases that affect the structures of the umbilical cord, and are one of the main factors that influence the development of newborns, consequently affecting different stages of growth. This disease is due to lack of hygiene, inadequate treatment of the navel or immune system involvement of the newborn, causing health problems and even death of the animal. Immediately after birth, it is extremely important to treat the navel, which consists of cleaning the area and applying antiseptic solutions, such as 10% iodine tincture, applied in the form of immersion. The prognosis of this disease depends on the occurrence of complications associated with infections, the clinical condition of the animal and the presence of pathologies, and can therefore vary between favorable and unfavorable.
