Abstract

The indiscriminate use of the morning-after pill, whose active ingredient is levonorgestrel, has become a growing concern in the field of reproductive health. This emergency contraceptive method, while effective, can pose health risks when used without proper guidance. In this context, pharmaceutical care plays a crucial role, both in educating patients and promoting the rational use of the medication. This literature review aims to discuss the importance of this pharmaceutical role, based on studies published between 2018 and 2024. The analysis highlights the need for an effective educational approach to prevent the excessive and improper use of the pill, avoiding potential adverse consequences such as hormonal imbalances, side effects, and impacts on reproductive health. Thus, it is concluded that the presence of the pharmacist as an advisor significantly contributes to public health, ensuring the safe and responsible use of levonorgestrel.
