Abstract

This research is an experimental study that aims to expand the existing knowledge base on the extraction and collection of material for genetic analysis of vitreous humor in human bodies, particularly in the context of DNA collection and studies. The objective of this study is to refine the methodology and technique for collecting this specific ophthalmic substance, which has a gelatinous and viscous consistency and is primarily composed of an amorphous semi-liquid substance, fibers, and cells. This substance is found in the posterior segment, between the lens and the retina, and under pressure, maintains the spherical shape of the eye. The objective of this case study is to present and discuss the potential applications of research with this particular element. Its use could be beneficial in the construction of profiles based on genetic analysis of victims, thereby contributing to the advancement of research and collections in the field of forensic biomedicine and forensic sciences. The case study presented in this introductory paper allows us to propose additional goals and recommendations for on-site research, particularly with regard to fresh bodies and at the micro and macro levels of collection and analysis. This includes charred or putrefied bodies that are received by the Forensic Expertise of the State of Ceará (PEFOCE), thereby contributing to the expansion of research in the field of forensic medicine.
