This literature review gathered articles published mainly in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese in the last five years in the PUBMED database, aiming to review the importance of arteriography in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral arterial disease. It was concluded that arteriography continues to be an essential tool in the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral arterial disease, providing detailed information about arterial anatomy and allowing simultaneous therapeutic interventions. Although it is an invasive procedure with potential risks, its benefits in the accurate assessment of peripheral arterial disease and in the planning of treatment strategies outweigh these risks in many cases, especially when detailed diagnosis and prompt treatment can prevent serious complications, such as critical ischemia, ulcerations and amputations. Therefore, its judicious use continues to be a key piece in the efficient management of peripheral arterial disease, offering a safer and more effective approach to improve clinical outcomes for patients.
