This article aims to discuss female crime, making a gender analysis. Focusing specifically on the concept of gender, sex and culture of patriarchy, it also addresses the reasons that make women enter the criminal world and, above all, the prison reality of women and challenges in combating female crime. This work aims to demonstrate that academic discussions on the topic do not specifically focus on the deepening influence of patriarchy as an oppressive system – which restricts women's life opportunities and makes them turn to crime as a form of subsistence –; the consequences that lead them to remain incarcerated; and also issues relating to the female prison reality. The aim, then, is to seek doctrinal basis that addresses discussions regarding the topic, in the sociological, economic, legal areas, human rights and, especially, women's rights as a whole. In this research, the method of investigation and bibliographical survey with a literature review was adopted, aiming to establish a greater understanding of the situation.
