Abstract

This integrative review assessed the effectiveness of health education programs in preventing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Twenty-seven studies were included that examined different educational approaches, focusing on lifestyle modification, such as diet and physical activity, in at-risk populations. The results showed that these programs are effective in reducing the incidence of T2DM, with significant reductions ranging from 15% to 58% among participants. The effectiveness was greater in culturally adapted interventions that included ongoing support, highlighting the importance of personalization and sustained engagement. However, challenges such as long-term adherence and sustainability of programs were identified, highlighting the need for public policies that support these initiatives. The review concludes that health education programs are essential tools in the prevention of T2DM, but require adaptive strategies and institutional support to maximize their benefits.
