The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of arterial hypertension (AH) and the association of its risk factors (RF) in young people aged between 18 and 35 years attending the Medical School of the University of Vassouras, Vassouras and Miguel Pereira Campuses, in order to contribute to the prevention of vascular damage and health promotion. An observational and cross-sectional study was conducted, approved by the Research Ethics Committee (nº 5.992.132), evaluating blood pressure (BP) and its RF in 146 respondents, after completing the Informed Consent Form. The measurement of BP and the acquisition of the Body Mass Index followed the protocol of the Brazilian Guidelines for AH, and the RF were self-reported via a form. For statistical analysis, the Chi-square and Fisher methods were used, and the strength of the association by Odds Ratio. From the partial results, gender was significantly associated with BP (p < 0.001), with prevalence of normotensive individuals in females (94.9%), while pre-HTN or HTN in males (18.8% and 3.1%, respectively). In this sample, in agreement with similar studies, men showed a greater association with the development of pre-HTN/HTN in this age group. However, it is necessary to conclude this research so that the real prevalence and association of RFs can be analyzed.
