Tooth whitening in devitalized teeth is a widely used procedure as it is a minimally invasive alternative, has a low cost and preserves healthy dental tissue. Discoloration of non-vital teeth occurs due to extrinsic or intrinsic factors based on location and etiology. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between internal whitening of non-vital teeth and external cervical resorption. This research was carried out through an integrative literature review, through the databases LILACS (Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences), Conexão ComCiência Journal and the Journal from Oral and Maxillofacial Cirurgy and Traumatology Brazilian Academy. According to the electronic search carried out, 320 publications related to the chosen theme were found. After applying the inclusion criteria, only 9 articles remained. There are several causes for tooth darkening, and internal tooth whitening is a highly requested therapy in this regard. Therefore, the recommendation of safer protocols becomes essential to avoid an inflammatory response of the periodontium and the possibility of resorption external root.
