Abstract

Introduction: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age, associated with a high prevalence of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. The psychological impact of PCOS, often overlooked, significantly affects patients' quality of life. Objective: This study aims to review the literature on the psychological impacts of PCOS and its comorbidities. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases, covering the period from 2009 to 2024. The final selection included 25 studies that address the relationship between PCOS and mental health. Data analysis was performed qualitatively, organized into main topics: prevalence of mental disorders, psychological impact, and multidisciplinary interventions. Results and Discussion: The review revealed that between 40% and 60% of women with PCOS suffer from depression, and between 34% and 57% experience anxiety. These disorders are exacerbated by factors such as body dissatisfaction and social stigma, negatively affecting treatment adherence and quality of life. Multidisciplinary interventions, including cognitive therapies and psychological support, have proven effective in reducing symptoms and improving clinical outcomes. Conclusion: The review highlights the need to integrate mental health into PCOS treatment, promoting a holistic and patient-centered approach. Understanding the psychological impacts is essential to improving the quality of life and long-term health outcomes for women with PCOS.
