The aim of the study was to demonstrate the nurse's contributions to the self-care of individuals with intestinal stomas. Using a theoretical-reflective study methodology constructed based on an exploratory literature review with a qualitative approach. Searching the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS); Nursing Database (BDEnf); Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) via the Virtual Health Library (BVS). The search results yielded 13 studies, resulting in three themes described as follows: Challenges faced by nurses in training individuals with intestinal elimination stomas; Impacts of the intestinal stoma on basic human needs; and Nurse assistance in the prevention and treatment of complications related to intestinal stomas. It was concluded that the nurse plays a multifaceted and fundamental role in improving the quality of life for individuals with intestinal stomas. Through educational activities, specific guidance for different contexts (such as in schools), and sensitive interventions in emotional and psychosocial areas, the nurse becomes an essential agent in the adaptation and reintegration of these individuals into society. The pursuit of patient-centered, continuous, and tailored care to the specific needs of each person is key to providing a full and satisfactory life for those facing the challenges of intestinal stomas.
