Abstract

When it comes to translation, humor presents a challenging genre as it involves relating the sociocultural aspects and linguistic particularities of source and target texts. This study aimed to analyze the subtitles of the American TV show Friends available on a streaming service, to determine whether the humor effect was preserved in the translation from English to Portuguese, as well as the technical procedures used in the translation according to Barbosa (1990). Through the analysis, the study examines the impact of translation/subtitling on the English language learning process by exploring how humor is translated and adapted, thereby developing intercultural competence and enhancing vocabulary and idiomatic understanding among learners. The methodology consisted of selecting episodes and separating subtitles in both the source (English) and target (Portuguese) languages. The theoretical framework for analyzing the corpus will include Zabalbeascoa's (1996) concepts of humor translation in TV series and Koglin's (2008) perspectives on subtitling.
