Botulinum toxin is used in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) due to its minimally invasive nature, agility, safety and efficacy proven through studies. This study was a literature review on the application of BONT-A as a form of treatment for TMD. A literature review was conducted on the use of botulinum toxin to control muscle pain in temporomandibular disorders. Studies focusing exclusively on aesthetic procedures were excluded. They were collected on the mechanism of action, its indications and contraindications, the treatment of TMD and the main complications associated with the use of the toxin. It is essential to complement the multidisciplinary treatment of TMD with botulinum toxin. Although this approach provides effective and satisfactory results, it is important to emphasize that it should not be the only form of treatment, as temporomandibular disorder has varied causes.
