Syphilis is a bacterial infection caused by Treponema pallidum, which can be transmitted in several ways, including sexual contact and vertical transmission from mother to baby during pregnancy or childbirth. Syphilis in pregnant women is a significant concern due to the serious consequences it can have on maternal and fetal health, such as miscarriage, fetal death, premature birth and congenital syphilis. Although syphilis is treatable, there is a significant increase in cases in the state of Paraná between 2019 and 2023, leading to concern about the ability of health systems to identify and treat these cases in a timely manner. This article analyzes the epidemiological profile of cases of syphilis in pregnant women in the state of Paraná over a 5-year period, according to year, federative unit, race and age.
