Maternal mortality reflects the state of health care and sanitation. Mortality rates in Brazil differ between the country's geographic regions. The aimed of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological profile of maternal deaths in the state of Paraná, from 2011 to 2021. This is a quantitative, retrospective, and descriptive study about maternal mortality, whose data were taken from the DATASUS Mortality Information System. 867 maternal deaths were recorded in Paraná, resulting in an annual average of 78.81 cases, and a mortality rate of 7.6/100,000 inhabitants. In this context, a significant increase in cases observed in 2021, with 187 occurrences. The majority of maternal deaths occurred in women aged 30 to 34 years (25.0%), of white color/race (69.3%), with 8 to 11 years of education (47.5%) and single (40. 8%). Moreover, the highest number of deaths was recorded in a hospital environment (91.9%), during the postpartum period, within 42 days (69.9%). There was a higher prevalence of deaths due to direct obstetric causes, totaling 53.3%. The municipality of Curitiba had the highest number of occurrences (9.6%). Therefore, the data shows a high number of maternal mortalities in the state of Paraná, directly affecting postpartum women who are socioeconomically vulnerable.
