Ancient civilizations, including ancient Egypt, were already concerned with aesthetics and weight loss, using teas and natural methods. However, in the modern era, the misuse of medicines and dietary supplements has replaced a balanced diet and physical exercise. The obesity rate in Brazil is on the rise, with a significant increase in obese people in recent years.The search for quick results and the pressure for aesthetic standards contribute to dependence on weight loss medications. The Brazilian population is one of those that consumes the most these medications in the world, such as semaglutide, sibutramine and liraglutide, as well as supplements. The intensive use of weight loss medications, especially without the guidance of a specialist, can pose several risks to the patient who takes them, causing various adverse events and even death. The objective of this work is to describe the dangers and adverse consequences arising from the intensive use for aesthetic purposes of weight loss medications and supplements used to treat excess weight/obesity. Through a descriptive bibliographic review, in a retrospective search in national and international databases in the years 2004 to 2024. Concluding the importance of correct guidance for healthy weight loss, which includes guidance from qualified health professionals, with expertise in subject in question. The adoption of balanced eating habits and regular physical activity are the basis for achieving a healthy and sustainable weight, without compromising your health.
