The present article will address the role of the dentist in controlling periodontal diseases, aiming for a deeper understanding of these conditions and their management strategies. By promoting collective oral health in hospital environments through the dissemination of knowledge and the encouragement of healthy habits among patients and their caregivers, a comprehensive and compassionate approach to care is sought. These initiatives not only help reduce the risk of infections from oral microbiota but also contribute to a healthier hospital environment. However, the inclusion of dentists in healthcare teams may be seen as an idealistic notion, especially given the frequent preference of the population for healthcare provided by the Unified Health System (SUS). In this context, Proposal Law No. 2,776/2008 advocates for the mandatory presence of dentists in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) and in public and private hospitals where patients are hospitalized, with the aim of providing comprehensive dental care. This measure aims not only to prevent local infections but also to reduce the risk of complications during hospitalization. Therefore, it becomes evident the need to develop a standardized protocol for dental care in hospital environments, as well as to integrate hospital dentistry into political-pedagogical projects. This will enable the planning and systematization of approaches that allow for the resolution of health problems in accordance with the standards, routines, and peculiarities of the various complex hospital settings.
