Abstract

This article explores the teaching of art, focusing on its historical context and a field research conducted at the Encanto dos Livros School, located in the Parque dos Nobres neighborhood, in São Luís, state of Maranhão. The investigation addresses the teaching of art in elementary education, adopting an interdisciplinary and cross-curricular approach. The analysis extends to the didactics in art education, teacher training, and the integration of themes such as the environment, environmental education, sustainability, and recycling, using the toy library as a pedagogical resource. The aim of this study is to present an interdisciplinary project based on contemporary theories and research that extol the teaching of art as a means of knowledge construction. With the project “I Recycle My Toy”, an effort was made to foster critical reflection on the addressed themes, aiming at the comprehensive education of students. This focus not only promotes environmental awareness but also encourages an appreciation for art through a methodology that encompasses artistic creation (production), contextualization (theoretical reflections), and enjoyment (appreciation).
