Objective: Spatiotemporal analysis, in a deterministic way, of the disease “hip fracture in the elderly” with the aim of diagnosing the current situation for the purposes of planning and managing current expenses and those estimated to come. Method: ecological study with a quantitative approach, using files from the DATASUS database of the Hospital Information System. Paid Hospital Admission Authorizations (AIHs) were obtained between 2011 and 2015 from the International Disease Codes (ICDs) S72-0 and S72-1, filtered by procedures of interest, osteosynthesis and hip arthroplasty. Descriptive analyzes of the data were carried out with measures of central tendency (mean) and dispersion (standard deviation). Dichotomous data were tested using chi-square (Pearson test). Continuous data were tested by Student's T test. The sample contains 18,682 AIHs, the target population studied. Results: The average age for the disease was 78.95 years. The average hospital stay was 7.21 days (SD: 6.39), ranging from 0 to 307 days, and generating a total cost, during the five years of study, of R$60,190,782.73. The average cost per hospitalization was R$3,221.86 (SD: R$3,033.83) ranging from R$961.84 to R$83,410.96. The in-hospital death rate was 4.6%. Conclusion: Hip fractures in the elderly have a major financial impact and the incidence tends to increase over the years. Planning aimed at caring for this disease, using protocols and specialized care centers can improve results and reduce costs.
