Bariatric surgery has established itself as a highly effective procedure in the treatment of morbid obesity. By promoting significant and sustained weight loss, it is an effective means of drastically improving the quality of life of patients with severe obesity. However, it is imperative that patients receive continuous multidisciplinary monitoring, involving doctors, nutritionists, psychologists and physical educators, to ensure that the physical, psychological and social benefits are maximized and that potential complications are managed appropriately. With adequate support, bariatric surgery can be a transformative tool, providing patients with a new perspective on life. This narrative literature review brought together articles published in the last five years in the PUBMED and SciELO databases, aiming to indicate the types of bariatric surgery and its late complications. Completed major procedures include: sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and duodenal switch. As for late complications, we can mention: nutritional deficiencies, strictures, ulcers, Dumping syndrome and weight regain.
