The objective of the article is to review the current literature on the prevalence of micronutrient deficiency in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases and discuss the need for nutritional interventions essential for a better prognosis of these diseases. It was observed that the perception of gastrointestinal symptoms occurs when the disease is active and this can present interference in the nutritional status of patients. Carriers of inflammatory bowel disease may present nutritional deficiencies during the progression of the pathology that can be caused by reduced food intake, malabsorption, increased nutritional needs and gastrointestinal losses, thus nutritional follow-up is essential to reduce the disease activity, recover/maintain the patient's nutritional status and reduce surgical indications.
