Abstract

The aim of the present study is to explore various facets relating to organized crime and gain insights into the origins and establishment of Brazil's most prominent criminal syndicates. The definition of these groups, although rooted in history, has become increasingly complex in modern times. This complexity arises from the unique characteristics of each group, often linked to their geographic origins and methods of operation. It is clear that this is a phenomenon that continues to expand. The global prevalence of this phenomenon can be attributed to a calculated collaboration between individuals who conspire to commit crimes in a structured and hierarchical manner. The objective of this project was to provide an overview of organized crime, with a special focus on the social factors that led to the emergence of criminal organizations in the country. Furthermore, it aimed to address the challenges in understanding and combating organized crime, highlighting its characteristics and methods and placing emphasis on the two main groups involved.
