Abstract

This study investigated the relationship between sepsis, Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), and comorbidities in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at São Lucas Hospital Foundation in Cascavel, Paraná. Sepsis, a severe condition involving organ dysfunction in patients with infection, is often associated with AKI, a syndrome characterized by the acute inability of the kidneys to perform their usual functions. Using electronic medical record data, the study analyzed a total of 63 septic patients, identifying associations between specific comorbidities and the development of AKI during sepsis. The results indicate that patients with diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, heart failure, prior kidney disease, overweight, and advanced age showed a higher predisposition to the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) during sepsis episodes. Detailed analysis revealed that 71.4% of diabetic patients developed AKI, while 68% of patients with arterial hypertension also presented this condition. The research emphasized the association of these two major comorbidities, showing an incidence of 77% of AKI in patients with both arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The study's discussion emphasizes the complex relationship between sepsis and AKI, highlighting the importance of the systemic inflammatory response triggered by sepsis, which can lead to compromised renal perfusion and predispose patients to pre-renal AKI. Early identification of risk factors, such as the comorbidities analyzed, is crucial for the prevention and early diagnosis of AKI in septic patients, thereby contributing to improved clinical outcomes and quality of life for these patients.
