Abstract

Lung neoplasia is an oncological pathology of significant global relevance due to its high incidence and substantial impact on population morbidity and mortality. Among the various histological types, squamous cell carcinoma of the lung represents an aggressive variant that often challenges conventional therapeutic resources. In advanced stages, metastatic dissemination is a common complication, potentially affecting different organ systems, such as bones, and resulting in severe complications like spinal cord compression. The 59-year-old patient JFS was diagnosed with right lung squamous cell carcinoma, stage II, after a biopsy in March 2021. Following a multifaceted treatment approach involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, the patient experienced disease recurrence, progressing to bone metastases. The metastatic lesions included osteolytic lesions in the spine, long bones, and adrenal glands. Furthermore, the patient developed symptoms of spinal cord compression, including intense pain, neurological deficits, and signs of muscle atrophy. Treatment consisted of continued palliative chemotherapy, pain management optimization, and corticosteroid administration to reduce spinal cord edema. Prophylactic measures were implemented to prevent infectious complications. The multidisciplinary approach, involving oncologists, radiologists, and palliative care, played a crucial role in managing the patient, aiming to alleviate symptoms, improve the quality of life, and optimize treatment. Computed tomography played an important role in detecting and monitoring metastatic lesions and spinal cord compression. This case underscores the importance of treatment individualization, collaboration among various medical specialties, and the application of therapeutic strategies tailored to disease progression. It highlights the challenges faced by patients with advanced lung neoplasia and bone metastases, as well as the ongoing need for research and innovation in the field of oncology to enhance clinical outcomes and the quality of life for these patients.
