Abstract

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by peripheral thrombocytosis due to megakaryocytic hyperplasia. It is a rare disease, with an incidence of 1 to 2 cases/100,000 habitants/year. The dominant clinical manifestations are thrombotic and/or hemorrhagic. However, around 25% to 35% of patients are asymptomatic. But despite being silent, thrombotic complications can occur in 10 to 20% of patients. Angina, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident (CVA) and pulmonary embolism may represent the first manifestation of the disease. Despite this, few cases associating thrombotic events with ET have been described in the literature. Thus, a case of ischemic stroke secondary to ET was reported in an 85-year-old patient, diagnosed with myeloproliferative neoplasia 8 years ago, using hydroxyurea twice a week for the same period, but abandoning hematological follow-up 2 years ago.
