Generic medicines play an essential role in public health, offering an effective and economical alternative to branded medicines. Despite having the same quality, safety and efficacy as reference medicines, there are still myths and challenges associated with their acceptance. The pharmacist appears as a central figure in this context, educating and clarifying doubts about the use of generics. Its use promotes significant savings, especially in chronic treatments, favoring patient adherence to treatment. Furthermore, the option for generics results in a reduction in costs for the healthcare system, benefiting society in general. Pharmaceutical care is essential to reinforce these benefits and ensure that patients receive the appropriate medication for their needs. This article will address this topic through data taken from the literature, with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of generics and, with pharmaceutical care, guiding consumers on the use of generic medicines.
