The Ministry of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding up to six months, due to the short and long-term benefits, contributing to the optimization of nutrition and child immunity, therefore breast milk plays a very relevant role in the healthy development of the human being. Objective: To discuss what the literature says about the effects of exclusive breastfeeding to optimize nutrition and child immunity, and highlight the importance of health professionals in this process. Materials and Methods: This is an integrative research and review, through a bibliographic survey that was carried out using data from the Ministry of Health, SciELO and PUBMED. Results: He results show that even with its benefits, early weaning is still a problem faced in Brazil, which is why there is a need for trained professionals. Conclusion: Therefore, the need for multidisciplinary professionals and trained nurses is essential, to break the barrier of misinformation, together with the government bodies responsible for disseminating information campaigns and actions.
