The present study is part of the doctoral thesis entitled The configuration of access to the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2001 to 2015): limits and advances in the process of democratization and deals with the movement of supply and distribution of university vacancies made available by the institution in the period studied . The theoretical contribution of French and Brazilian sociology was based on the analyzes carried out on the university field and the elite school (BOURDIEU, 1989) and the concepts of democratization and demography (LANGOÜET, 2002). For the latter author an effective process of democratization requires "not only the increase of the chances of all but also the approximation of the chances between different socio-professional categories" (p.86). In order for different social groups to have access to public higher education and, later, professional careers, it is necessary to offer more vacancies and diversify the modalities of their distribution. In relation to the example of UFSC, we noticed an increase in vacancies in the main campus of Florianópolis, mainly between 2008 and 2009 in the existing courses, and in the following years some new graduations were created and the expansion of the university to other units within the State. We observed a strong growth in the area of engineering, a phenomenon that did not happen in the same way in other areas of knowledge offered by the institution.
