Prematurity is classified when a neonate is born at less than 37 weeks of gestation; in view of this, the newborn requires a great deal of care, since he was born ahead of schedule, which is why the nursing team, together with the family, is of great importance for the treatment and development of this newborn. The aim of this study was to describe how the professional nursing team plays an important role in care and how their care affects neonatal treatment and development; in addition, the epidemiology, definition of prematurity, mortality and the importance of nursing were highlighted. In this sense, it is indisputable that the nursing team, the multi-professional team and the family all play an active role in the development of the newborn. Even though they are sensitive beings, deaths can often be avoided when care is provided properly. The article shows the main precautions for reducing deaths, after realizing the need for health professionals to be up-to-date, since these professionals need an effective and efficient approach so that the newborn survives without sequelae and is healthy. The methodology used was a literature review based on sites such as Scielo, Redalyc and books on the subject. It was concluded that the nursing professional must be able to carry out the necessary interventions, using all the technical/scientific knowledge available to them.
