The use of plants for therapeutic purposes dates back to the beginning of human history. Medicinal plants are vegetables that contain substances with therapeutic and phytotherapy action, a way of curing and preventing diseases that is growing throughout the world. This study consisted of a review of the literature on the therapeutic effects of Cannabis sativa, especially cannabidiol (CBD), for the treatment of acne. The research was carried out using articles, theses and dissertations in the databases of SCIELO, PUBMED and Google Scholar. As inclusion criteria, studies in Portuguese and English were used, available in the selected databases and in the Google search engine, in the period from 2013; and excludes duplicate and paid literature. 12 literatures were selected to compose the results, 67% (8) in Portuguese and 33% (4) in English, taking into account the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Cannabis sativa on the skin, focusing on CBD and the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The study suggested that CBD could be an interesting alternative to treat acne, stimulating the excessive production of sebaceous lipids, in addition to having antioxidant properties that can contribute to skin rejuvenation. Research has also highlighted the potential of ECS in regulating the inflammatory response in the skin. The study could contribute to new discoveries in the field of dermatology and provide a new approach to acne treatment and skin care in general.
