Abstract

The central objective of this book is to examine the profound importance of reading and writing in the formation of active, conscious and engaged citizens. Focusing on the dialectic between citizenship and literacy, we argue that competence in reading and writing that extends beyond the simple ability to decode texts and write words is vital for the full exercise of rights and duties in the civil, social and political dimensions.
This work also investigates the essential role of the educational institution and education professionals in the contemporary context.
