THE IMPORTANCE OF READING AND WRITING IN THE FORMATION OF CITIZENSHIP
Keywords:
Citizenship. Reading. Policy.Abstract
The central objective of this book is to examine the profound importance of reading and writing in the formation of active, conscious and engaged citizens. Focusing on the dialectic between citizenship and literacy, we argue that competence in reading and writing that extends beyond the simple ability to decode texts and write words is vital for the full exercise of rights and duties in the civil, social and political dimensions.
This work also investigates the essential role of the educational institution and education professionals in the contemporary context. Educators are seen here not only as transmitters of knowledge, but as critical facilitators and mediators who can inspire and equip students to become active and critical members of society.
The book unfolds into a series of chapters that cover everything from the importance of democratic school management to the necessary synergy between school, family and society to form critical and conscious citizens.
Given that the challenges of education and citizenship are constantly evolving, this book is not intended to be a conclusion, but a starting point for future discussions and investigations.
