Abstract

In this study, the role of public policies in Brazil aimed at the growing elderly population was investigated, a global phenomenon that presents multiple challenges in areas such as health, economy, and social integration. Using a bibliographic methodology, based on the analysis of existing literature as per Marconi and Lakatos (2003), the tangible achievements of these policies were discerned, and ongoing challenges were identified. The results suggest that, despite the progress observed in public policies directed at the elderly population, Brazil's transition from an essentially assistentialist approach to one that robustly values and defends the human rights of the elderly continues to face significant challenges in practice. In this scenario, there is a relevant and crucial role for public policies, underscoring the imperative of their effective implementation, rigorous monitoring, and flexibility to adapt in the face of changes and demands. The integration of different governmental sectors, combined with the proactive participation of the elderly in the decisions and formulations of these policies, emerges as a central element to ensure that the aging process in the country occurs in a dignified, respectful, and truly inclusive manner.
