Abstract

Considering the high rates of psychologically abused women, their silencing and the low number of reports, this study aims to collect data and information about psychological violence in the family context. With this, the objective was to describe the historical trajectory of the criminalization of violence against women in Brazil, highlighting the impasses encountered over time as well as the different types of violence and the impacts caused on the mental health of abused women. The study also sought to describe how the psychologist works within the context of violence. To this end, a narrative bibliographical review is carried out, through articles and books that portray the reality of psychologically abused women and that focus on psychological violence, as an offshoot of other forms of violence. With the narrative review, it is possible to discuss the suffering of women who are victims of psychological violence in the family environment and elucidate ways and strategies to reduce violence, based on psychology and literature. It is based on the hypothesis that psychological violence is the least externalized form of violence against women, making clear the importance of studies being carried out, increasing the need to combat it.
