Abstract

The emergence of cases of infection by the SARS-CoV-2 viral genome and its exponential transmissibility were the determinants for the start of a new pandemic in the beginning of 2020. The multiple manifestations of the new disease and its nuances are still intriguing. What is, in fact, known is that the concurrence of comorbidities such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases with the infection is responsible for worsening the clinical prognosis and for increasing mortality rates. Diabetes mellitus was ranked second, in several studies, in the ranking of disease severity and mortality factors. Therefore, the objective of this article is to evaluate the clinical outcome of diabetic patients who tested positive for COVID-19 and were hospitalized in the ICU of a private hospital in Western Paraná. This is a retrospective study of qualitative and quantitative analysis carried out between March 2020 and February 2021. Among the records included in the study, we found that patients who died had other comorbidities associated with Diabetes mellitus, such as obesity, dyslipidemia, heart failure, among others, with systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) being the main ones. The study demonstrated that the most common comorbidity in cases of death, in addition to Diabetes mellitus, was SAH. It should also be noted that this association was equivalent between male and female patients.
