Abstract

Illiteracy is one of the most serious social problems in many parts of the world, impeding personal development and limiting employment opportunities. When combined with the prison system, it creates a cycle of disadvantage that is difficult to break. In this sense, this article aims to explore the interconnection between illiteracy and the prison system, highlighting the implications of education in the resocialization of incarcerated individuals. To this end, the research methodology was a bibliographic review; for the development of the research, Google Scholar, scientific articles, theses, dissertations and books were used as a basis. Finally, it is concluded that it is important to recognize illiteracy as a significant factor in the cycle of prison and poverty. Awaken society and public policy makers to invest in education as a fundamental way to break the vicious cycle of illiteracy and prison. Additionally, the study highlights the need to provide educational opportunities within the prison system to help inmates acquire skills that can help them productively reintegrate into society upon release.
