Paulo Freire's work is divided into 4 chapters: 1- Society in Transition, 2 - Closed Society and Democratic Inexperience, 3 - Education Versus Massification 4 - Education and Awareness. These chapters portray the criticisms/reflections and evaluations made by Freire (1999) in the work Education as Practice of Freedom, and the author reveals the issue of the "Method" of Literacy for adults in detail, contextualizing the historical processes alongside the philosophical and political assumptions.
In this way, this critical review aims to highlight the main questions of the essay, as well as some analytical reflections on the work. In general, the author reports on the pedagogical experience he carried out, before the 1964 Coup, and also discusses the literacy method for young people and adults, which took place in northeastern Brazil. He also discusses the regression of mass education defended during the military dictatorship.
