Refugees who enter Brazilian soil face several difficulties, including the difficulty of communicating. It is clear that there are courses aimed at learning the Portuguese language at public universities in the country, but these courses, as they adopt a general methodology, do not effectively contribute to the refugee learning to communicate in a more emergency way, given that courses are generally semester-long. Therefore, this article aims to address the need to create and improve Portuguese language courses at Universities in Brazil, as well as to promote training and qualification courses for professionals for this purpose, based on the Portuguese Project model Brazilian Program for Humanitarian Migration, implemented by the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). The methodology is bibliographic, documentary, qualitative and theoretical in nature. It is concluded that the difficulty in learning the local language constitutes an obstacle to the integration of refugees in Brazil, given that, when entering Brazilian territory, there is a greater need to communicate with Brazilians to, for example, enroll a child at school, accessing the healthcare system, among other acts that require more urgent communication.
