This research presents a general analysis of the maintenance institute, exposing its concept, nature, basis, classification and assumptions, as well as the measures to guarantee the fulfillment of the maintenance obligation. It aims, more specifically, to demonstrate that the age of majority, by itself, does not automatically generate the exoneration of the parents' duty to provide maintenance to their children, since this obligation persists as long as there is the binomial need for the fed and financial possibility of the feeder. Thus, the hypotheses in which the older children are entitled to receive the food allowance are analyzed. The entire approach is based on Brazilian legislation, doctrine and jurisprudence.
