This systematic review comprehensively analyzed the effects of physical activity on mental health, exploring its influence on emotional well-being, anxiety, depression, stress and quality of life. The review considered observational studies, clinical trials and systematic reviews, evaluating the results of different demographic groups and considering possible mechanisms of action. The results consistently show that regular physical activity is associated with improved psychological and emotional well-being, as well as reduced symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress. The analysis also highlighted the importance of physical activity as a strategy to promote quality of life and mental health in specific populations, such as children, adolescents, the elderly and individuals with pre-existing mental health conditions. The possible mechanisms of action discussed include neurobiological, psychosocial and behavioral aspects that contribute to the observed benefits. The review highlights the need to consider integrated approaches to mental health promotion, recognizing that physical activity is part of a set of strategies. In conclusion, this systematic review reinforces the relevance of physical activity as an effective intervention in promoting mental health. The presented results have important implications for clinical practice and health policy, highlighting the importance of prescribing physical activity as part of strategies to promote emotional and psychological well-being.
