This study aims to raise and discuss the experiences and difficulties pointed out by academics during the supervised internship in a hospital in the Southern Region of Brazil, according to the Federal Pharmacy Council, by Resolution No. 300, from January 30, 1997, which regulates the professional practice in pharmacy in hospital units, of a public or private nature. This is a descriptive and qualitative study, of the experience report type, carried out from April to May of 2023. The results point to a reflection on the rational use of psychotropic drugs administered to patients. The drug, however, cannot be considered a synonym for health, as its effectiveness is only guaranteed when used rationally. To maximize benefits and minimize risks, there is an undeniable need for a professional responsible for the entire drug cycle within the hospital, from selection, negotiation with suppliers, storage, control, to dispensing and use by the patient. Thus, the recognition of the importance of the rational use of medicines makes the hospital pharmacy increasingly valued, as well as the pharmaceutical professional.
