The beginning of laparoscopy in Brazil in the mid-1990s was a target of resistance on the part of surgical services, the need for specialized training added to the higher cost to perform procedures under this new method was partially overcome after this technique presented positive results and a range of benefits to patients. Cholecystectomy and appendectomy lead the indications for its realization, although both procedures have risks and complications, it can be said that currently it is considered the preferred route by many different surgeons. The present study aimed to establish a comparative overview between the laparotomic versus laparoscopic approach in appendectomies and cholecystectomies from 1992 to 2021 according to the epidemiological estimate provided by the SUS information system (DATASUS). It was observed that comparatively, the laparoscopic techniques provide shorter hospital stay, added to a lower mortality. Still, statistically it was possible to establish that after its implementation, there was an increase in the overall number of surgeries. Even though there are still some discussions about its postoperative outcome, it is a promising technique that adds to the quality of life of surgical patients.
