Over the years, the advent of new technologies and the improvement of techniques allowed more surgeries to be performed in the world. However, surgical complications are still a cause of frustration in medical practice, and can be caused by several reasons, making the treatment more time consuming and costly. For the patient to have a proper recovery, it is necessary for the physician to evaluate all surgical wounds, temperature profiles, pain levels, activity levels, nutritional status, intake and the patient's output. In this way, the chances of complications in the face of a well-kept home are minimal. Therefore, this literature review brought together articles from the main databases aiming to point out the clinical picture, the main causes and the treatment for cases of seroma and hematoma, very frequent complications in the postoperative period. It is extremely important to evaluate prophylactic measures for specific cases that present with complications in the surgical wound. The precision of the treatment in some situations has the ability to prevent more significant damage to the health of the individual, revealing the need for a thorough evaluation of the clinical picture for the doctor and his team to take action.
