Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal seizures are characterized as neurological pathologies and are among the most frequent in this period, occurring in up to 1.4% of newborns and up to 20% of premature infants. OBJECTIVE: To carry out a review of the literature regarding a better understanding of neonatal seizures, seeking to highlight its importance, as well as its main characteristics and challenges in the current scenario. METHODOLOGY: The current research is characterized as a narrative literature review, with a qualitative descriptive-exploratory approach. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Neonatal seizures have a mortality rate of 20%, which can generate several consequences such as epilepsy, psychomotor deficits, cerebral palsy and a certain delay in the child's brain development. CONCLUSION: The use of old drugs is still highlighted, but new drugs are increasingly gaining space as new studies are being developed to prove their efficacy and safety.
