Introduction: The lack of knowledge about palliative care (PC) and the prejudice regarding the topic are still very relevant in Brazil, even among health professionals. Among the factors that justify this reality, the deficiency in continued training of health professionals on the subject stands out. This study aimed to analyze the level of knowledge about PC of health workers at a long-stay institution (ILPI) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Methods: Exploratory, descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The site is a senior residential that promotes continuous care for the elderly, 22 employees were interviewed following the Bonn Palliative Care Knowledge script. Results: The average of correct answers in the questions was 47%. Questions 5, 15 and 13 were the ones with the highest hit rate. Questions 6, 17 and 4 had the highest error rate. Discussion: Although it is possible to observe the expansion of palliative care as a therapeutic practice, there is still a large deficit related to this form of approach. Developing countries have less availability of hospices and palliative care services, as well as inadequate access to pain management medications. Conclusion: It was observed a need to improve knowledge about palliative care. In this way, it will be possible to promote actions to optimize care based on permanent education more focused on the theoretical and practical needs experienced.
