Identify the risks of self-medication in the elderly, with a high rate of generating more serious health problems. As age increases, diseases common to this age group are presented, which induces the use of self-medication. Elderly people who use medication without the guidance of a Doctor are at risk of starting a problem or generating more serious consequences. Studies show that when it comes to self-medication in the elderly, the risk is even greater, the act of self-medication can cause consequences such as adverse reactions and drug interactions. The pharmacist can contribute positively to the health and better quality of life of the elderly. Patient understanding of the disease, forms of treatment, drug risks and benefits, and interventions to improve coordinated drug communication can minimize polypharmacy and promote rational use.
