Ameloblastoma is a benign but invasive odontogenic tumor that originates from the epithelium of the dental organs. This article reviewed the current literature on ameloblastoma, focusing on its epidemiology, pathogenesis, classification, diagnosis and treatment. It has been observed that ameloblastoma is more common in young adults and occurs more frequently in the mandible than in the maxilla. Different histological subtypes have been described, with variations in biology and prognosis. Diagnosis is based on clinical and imaging exams, but biopsy is essential to confirm the diagnosis and histological type. Treatment includes conservative or radical surgery, depending on location, size, and histological subtype. Recurrence is common, and long-term follow-up is required. The management of ameloblastoma should be individualized and based on a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, when indicated.
