In Brazil, illegal sharing of intellectual property in digital media is one of the biggest problems we face regarding copyright protection. Illegal sharing of content is a copyright violation, which can lead to lawsuits and high fines. The Copyright Law - Law 9.610/98 - establishes that any form of reproduction, distribution, adaptation, transmission, public display and communication of intellectual works, without the author's express authorization, is considered a crime. Within this context, the present research seeks to answer the following question: What are the possibilities that someone has to use the intellectual properties of others, which are accessible by digital media? Aiming to answer this problem, the study has assumed the purpose of analysing which are the legal possibilities that someone has of using the intellectual properties of others, which are accessible through the internet. Thus, this research was carried out by means of a bibliographical survey, to obtain a better approximation to the object of research. After performing the research, the results obtained point out that, besides the damage to the content creators, illegal sharing may also lead to the dissemination of copyrighted content, which results in damage to the consumer, since the content may be of low quality or malicious content. In light of this, it is important for people to recognise copyright and understand that illegal sharing is an illegal activity that can lead to serious consequences. It is necessary for people to seek legitimate means to obtain content, such as streaming services and subscriptions to digital media services, to avoid copyright issues.
