TEACHING AFRICAN CULTURE IN BASIC EDUCATION SCHOOLS

Abstract

This paper addresses the teaching of African culture in basic education schools, highlighting its importance for the appreciation of cultural diversity, the promotion of racial equality, and the fight against racism in the school environment. The research analyzes the advances provided by Law No. 10.639/2003, which made the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African History and Culture mandatory in Brazilian educational institutions. It also discusses the challenges related to teacher training, the use of appropriate teaching materials, and the implementation of anti-racist pedagogical practices. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the relevance of schools in building respect for cultural differences and in the civic education of students. The methodology used was a literature review based on scientific articles, official documents, and academic publications on the subject. It is concluded that the teaching of African culture contributes to the construction of a more inclusive, democratic, and diversity-oriented education.
