WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS IN THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

Workplace accidents in hospital settings constitute a significant public health issue, affecting workers' quality of life, institutional productivity, and healthcare system costs. Healthcare professionals are constantly exposed to biological, chemical, physical, ergonomic, and psychosocial risks, making hospitals environments of high occupational vulnerability. This study aims to analyze the main workplace accidents occurring in hospital settings, their determining factors, and the contributions of the update to Regulatory Standard No. 1 (NR-01) regarding the prevention of these adverse events. It is an integrative literature review based on national and international publications from 2020 to 2026. The results show that accidents involving sharps, exposure to biological agents, and musculoskeletal injuries remain among the most frequent occurrences. Furthermore, psychosocial factors—such as excessive workload, occupational stress, and workplace harassment—have emerged as key determinants of work-related illness. Given the alarming rise in workplace accidents in the healthcare sector, particularly among nursing professionals, it is necessary to re-evaluate the effectiveness of occupational health and safety measures. The study concludes that the update to NR-1 represents a significant advancement by incorporating psychosocial risks into Occupational Risk Management, thereby strengthening strategies for prevention and the promotion of worker health.strategy and its reputation for the corporate institution's image in the face of attacks and criticisms of the quality of its products and services, inevitably exposing its brands in social networks.
